"Certain styles of music, they need that warmth. They need that feeling. Soul, reggae, hip-hop, even punk - they sound so much better on vinyl.
"Digital delivered the one thing the business thought the consumer wanted was convenience," says Fields. "But I don't think it did anything to strengthen the connection between the music and the fan. When you reduce the visual marker to a thumbnail, it's not like holding a CD let alone a 12" LP."

Sales of LPs Surge 49% but Aging Factories Struggle to Keep Pace
Six million vinyl albums were sold in 2013 and 2014 is shaping up to be another record-breaking year with 4 million vinyl albums sold in the United States in the first six months, putting it on pace to reach over 7 million in sales by year’s end.
The last five years have seen vinyl sales increasing year after year, with CD sales sliding. Through the first half of 2014, CD sales dropped 19.6 percent, while LP/vinyl sales increased 40.4 percent nationally, according to Nielsen Soundscan reports. In 2013, more than 6 million vinyl LPs were sold, up 33 percent from 4.5 million in 2012.
It shouldn’t be a surprise, but the No. 1 vinyl album of the year, sales-wise, is Jack White’s ultra-LP, ‘Lazaretto.’ With its many goodies — including locked grooves, holograms and hidden tracks under the center labels — ‘Lazaretto’ proves to be much more than just an album; it’s a unique piece of vinyl history. It has sold 75,700 since being released on June 10, according to Nielsen SoundScan data.
“Isn’t it strange?” Runge mused. “I’m an automation engineer. I never thought I’d be dealing with vinyl. It’s unexpected. But it’s also unexpectable.”
